(This is a letter I sent out to my store, RSQ. We had a great time at this local transfer station.)
(Because knowledge is power!)
Kind of gross…but sort of beautiful, huh?
This is a shot of the Shoreline Transfer Station located off of I-5 on 165th Street.
A few of us Team Members were lucky enough to take a quick tour of it yesterday.
It was a rainy and dreary afternoon, but that didn’t damper our spirits
or stop us from learning about this high-tech waste transfer process.
Our fearless leader Mario was trying to grasp the concept of a transfer station.
He got it after some thought.
In the middle of the station was a big heap of trash where station employees would sort to transfer to Eastern Washington.
This is all LANDFILL material, which is too bad.
It gives you an idea as to how little people do to sort out their recyclables and compostables from waste.
There was a huge pile for recyclable metal scraps.
And a bin for organic material destined for Cedar Grove composting…
And these big trucks located below the receiving platform would haul the material away. A pretty efficient system.
Pamela was very happy to learn about what happens to our trash after we throw it away…
…As Mario egged on the huge tractor.
This facility got PLATINUM on its LEED certification, which is something not many companies can brag about.
All in all, it was a delightful tour of a state-of-the-art facility right in our neighborhood. We suggest you check it out yourself!
